The chapter aims at analyzing whether female entrepreneurs have some distinctive capacities than men in managing business within the Italian wine industry and if these skills are useful for the sustainability of their farms and the whole sector. After the sketch of the women situation in the Italian agriculture and in the wine sector, we have analyzed two case studies located in two wine regions, Tuscany and Sardinia, by having meetings and interviewing two wine women. The two regions are quite different for the general condition of winemaking and for the internationally perceived image. Furthermore, the two informants have different family histories and manage different dimensioned farms. Our findings are that these two female entrepreneurs, even starting from different general conditions, have been able to use their own leading capabilities in the improvement of business and in collective regional and national initiative of wine promotion. Basing eco- nomic decisions on formal and/or contextual training, they have introduced inno- vations in farming, winemaking, and marketing in a specific way. We can say they have been someway slower, less hasty, and even more effective than men in involving collaborators with a charismatic heading and attracting other entrepre- neurs in doing business. The role of women in farming has been too long underrated by society and the policymakers, who, on the contrary, should provide more specific attentions to the female capacity to foster the sustainability of their own farms and the wine Italian industr

Social-life cycle assessment as an extended tool for the measurement of the social responsibility in the agro-food sector

    Get PDF
The growing attention of consumers to the social and environmental aspects associated with the production of agro-industrial goods is a key driver for leading companies. The attention to social and environmental issues increases the added value of a company. A useful tool that can measure the Social Responsibility of a business is the Social-Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA). The aim of this paper is to suggest a better diffusion of the S-LCA implementation in the agri-food sector, since the social dimensions of sustainability have still limited application worldwide. This scope is in line with the literature's recommendation to carry out more case studies to improve the methodology and highlight where the S-LCA is weak. The paper includes two stages: firstly a description of the methodology is proposed; secondly we will present the results of some studies, focused on the agro-industrial sector, to see what information can be drawn from S-LCA implementation

The Structure of Rural Landscape in Monetary Evaluation Studies: Main Analytical Approaches in Literature

    Get PDF
Over recent years considerable research has been devoted to the assessment of the rural landscape value. These studies have concerned both use and non-use value estimation. An important issue in monetary evaluations is about taking (or not) into account the structural complexity of landscape. Three analytical approaches may be recognized on the basis of whether landscape structural attributes are involved (global, mono-attribute and multi-attribute approach). The present work is part of a research aimed to seek out rational instruments for guidance policies on rural landscape. It consists in a survey of the main studies appeared in literature. The specific purpose is to classify these empirical analyses in accordance both to the approaches mentioned above and to the landscape typologies (agricultural or forestry) involved.rural landscape, structural attributes, landscape demand, contingent valuation models, choice experiment, Land Economics/Use, Q26,

Implementing the Future Rural Policy. A Multi-stakeholder Governance Test in Reality

    Get PDF
In a changing and turbulent economic global scenario, the public sustain to agriculture will face counteracting local forces originating from some local actors, unwilling to accept all the facets of the CAP and the RDP. Power and leadership of actors and main social leader can help or contrasts implementation of public policies. So that policymakers will not avoid the confron- tation with people and the hard work to continuously survey their willings and interests. The comparison between two case-studies located in different Italian regions (the Marches and Friuli Venezia-Giulia) showed the essential role of local interests in the success/failure of implement- ing the public interventions. The paper reports results of case-studies located in different socio- geographical areas, the case of the \u2018Verdicchio of Matelica Wine Road\u2019 in the Marches, and the case of the \u2018Rural District Bassa Pianura Friulana\u2019. The failure of a proposed rural policy depends on local counteracting interests. Implementing the Future Rural Policy in a view of positive suc- cess does necessitate the continual and fatiguing consultations with local communities

Foodies' movement fostering stakeholders' networks: A regional case study

    Get PDF
The central theme of this work revolves around the foodies' movement under three perspectives: firstly, from a conceptual point of view to give account of its relevance in terms of consumer demand; secondly, to verify how, from the supply side, this movement can to some extent encourage and/or strengthen the creation of networks of local actors indispensable to encourage the meeting between the needs of the demand and supply of typical food products; thirdly, based on a case study to demonstrate that the movement of foodies can be exploited within a political action aimed at reorienting local tourism development. A national case study – Alghero, IT – was analysed. By positioning the rural and urban spaces with respect to the foodies' phenomenon, the existence/absence of networks between local stakeholders some obstacles emerged so as many opportunities. The stakeholder analysis was appliedand discussed. This method was very useful for identifying the role, power and leadership that the various local actors have in favoring or hindering the creation of connection networks between the city and the countryside, and in the requalification of the supply of typical foods that fit well into the current demand trend

Acute Delta Hepatitis in Italy spanning three decades (1991–2019): Evidence for the effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccination campaign

    Get PDF
Updated incidence data of acute Delta virus hepatitis (HDV) are lacking worldwide. Our aim was to evaluate incidence of and risk factors for acute HDV in Italy after the introduction of the compulsory vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1991. Data were obtained from the National Surveillance System of acute viral hepatitis (SEIEVA). Independent predictors of HDV were assessed by logistic-regression analysis. The incidence of acute HDV per 1-million population declined from 3.2 cases in 1987 to 0.04 in 2019, parallel to that of acute HBV per 100,000 from 10.0 to 0.39 cases during the same period. The median age of cases increased from 27 years in the decade 1991-1999 to 44 years in the decade 2010-2019 (p < .001). Over the same period, the male/female ratio decreased from 3.8 to 2.1, the proportion of coinfections increased from 55% to 75% (p = .003) and that of HBsAg positive acute hepatitis tested for by IgM anti-HDV linearly decreased from 50.1% to 34.1% (p < .001). People born abroad accounted for 24.6% of cases in 2004-2010 and 32.1% in 2011-2019. In the period 2010-2019, risky sexual behaviour (O.R. 4.2; 95%CI: 1.4-12.8) was the sole independent predictor of acute HDV; conversely intravenous drug use was no longer associated (O.R. 1.25; 95%CI: 0.15-10.22) with this. In conclusion, HBV vaccination was an effective measure to control acute HDV. Intravenous drug use is no longer an efficient mode of HDV spread. Testing for IgM-anti HDV is a grey area requiring alert. Acute HDV in foreigners should be monitored in the years to come
